The Role
I found the experience enjoyable as I got to do two rotations during my internship in Global Markets. I found at times that the work given to me did not help me learn more about the business or develop skills which would have been more useful.
Depending on who you work with you can make some great friends at work, my work on one desk was being sent to clients so it made you feel more valued.
We were given a mentor who was there to talk to throughout the programme, and it was useful to gain an insight into what they do and to give you tips on what you should do. Due to it being the summer holidays, many weeks my line manager or buddy was out which gave you less time to interact with them and gain feedback from them.
I had lots of work to do on my first rotation and was constantly learning through working. However on my 2nd rotation it was more focussed on speaking to people in the business which meant other than typing minutes out, and my project I had less meaningful work to do.
I was given responsibility for different tasks which I was expected to complete in good time, and often were given to or used for clients. I had some client interaction through attending meetings.
We had a week long training at the start of the internship, which did help to develop some technical skills. We had a morning volunteering, and a couple of coaching sessions on presentation skills. I was given two days of internal training on my 2nd rotation which would have been so much more useful if I was given them on my first rotation as they related more to that than my 2nd rotation of which they had no relevance. Training was a good opportunity to meet the other interns though.
The Company
Generally it is quite a busy place to work, with lots going on every day. During the summer we got to see lots of economic and geopolitical events play out which was interesting to see how the market reacted.
The internship was structured well with 3 shadowing sessions over the internship, it was easy to react out to HR if needed.
Everyone invested their time in helping us learn, training was helpful to grasp the basics although was rushed through towards the end. Overall I learnt a great deal over my internship from the time people invested in me.
Job prospects felt high during the internship, however come the last day many were left disappointed from the fairly low headcount desks were given. Compared to prior years it did seem a lot less than expected.
The Culture
London is a great place to have a great social life, and on some Friday nights HR had organised drinks for us. Everyone got on really well, and spent lots of time together.
London is known to be expensive, so costs were generally high. However the salary took that into account.
Nightlife is great in London, however working the hours you do leaves less time to enjoy the nightlife.
Touch Rugby was put on for the interns which was a nice addition.
