The Role
I really enjoyed my placement with Grant Thornton. Everyone within my office was so lovely and really tried to help me get the most out of my internship. I was able to speak to clients one-on-one, perform two stock-takes, carry-out everyday audit work on-site as well as deliver a presentation to the people in my office. The highlight was definitely the two-day training at Bradenham which every intern attends as, not only did I get to meet other interns from across the country, but I also improved my presentation skills and confidence with public speaking - skills which have already been useful for my final year back at university.
I felt really valued by my colleagues as they always appreciated even the smallest piece of work that I could do for them and were always helpful in trying to find work for me to do.
My people manager was great. Unfortunately it's not very busy during the summer - especially in the smaller offices. However he really tried to get me on as many on-site jobs as possible - even collaborating with other offices nearby which meant I was able to work with an even greater network of people. This definitely heightened my internship experience.
As mentioned before, unfortunately the summer isn't a very busy time in the Audit field meaning that there were occasions where I was stuck without work. However, as a part of my internship I was required to deliver a presentation on a given topic to colleagues in my office, therefore during this time without Audit work to do I was able to work on my presentation.
During my internship I was constantly given responsibility, especially whilst on-site at clients. As mentioned previously, on one job I was regularly communicating with the client and was in charge of collecting the correct information needed by the audit team. On another job, I was given the responsibility to carry out a stock-take at one of the client's sites. Even in the office I felt that I was given a high level of responsibility which really helped me to learn a lot.
Throughout my internship I was able to improve my presentation skills, my people skills as well as my general Accounting and Audit knowledge. All of these will assist me in upcoming university assessments as well as further in the future with clients and other colleagues.
The Company
The general atmosphere was fantastic, all of my colleagues were lovely to work with and I really enjoyed the office I worked in. It was quite a relaxed atmosphere and everyone was very happy to help.
It was well-organised and I was booked onto multiple clients and so gained a wide-range of experience. Not only this, but two training days at Bradenham were also organised for all of the interns.
I worked on a number of different jobs, both in the office and at client's premises, which really helped me to gain a lot of experience in the Audit career. As well as this, the training days in Bradenham really developed my presentation skills and improved my public speaking which have already been useful for my final year at University. During my internship I really got the feeling that Grant Thornton invest in its people and are focused on really developing you as an individual.

I have now accepted my job offer and will start working next September, I couldn't imagine working for another company! Grant Thornton offer a multitude of career prospects so, as well as gaining a professional qualification, I will also get the opportunity to do either a secondment abroad or into another department.
The Culture
We regularly went out for lunch with colleagues and a quiz night was held at the office. As well as this, the training days in Bradenham were a great opportunity to meet interns from around the country and, outside of the training hours, there was a good social scene with a quiz held in the evening and a games room open for use.
I was able to live at home for the duration of my internship meaning that the cost of living wasn't an issue (although I lived approximately an hour away so the cost of commuting was relatively high) and the cost of socialising was similar to what I'm used to.
