The Role
I really enjoyed my HSBC internship. The people working in my commercial centre were more than happy to answer any questions that I had. Although sometimes I felt a little bit lost, I found that leaving me to my own devices made me more aware of the things I was expected to do during my time here; I had to use my initiative more than I have done in other internships.
By the majority of my colleagues, I was welcomed straight away. Everyone was curious as to why I was in the centre and what I wanted to achieve. Everyone seemed to have time for me, even when I was busy! A really friendly and happy experience!
I was given a lot of support by manager sin the centre. Every senior manager took me to at least one client meeting which was so useful.
We were given a project during the internship which we had to fulfill and present on in the second to last week. This meant that every spare minute was used trying to finish and perfect the project in order to show off our skills in research.
I was given some responsbility during my placement. I was not given access to a main system used in the bank until the second ot last week but that was mainly due to IT issues more than anything else. I was responsible for my own development and sorting out my meetings and shadowing days.
I found the HSBC internship really useful in terms of motivating me to take control of my own learning. I learnt a lot during my time here and it will prove useful in a future banking career (hopefully with HSBC!)
The Company
It was friendly and fairly relaxed. Everyone seemed to enjoy their job and was more than happy to help one another.
It was really wlel organised with a book given out at the beginning explaining what was expected of us. Managers were kept up to date by the coordinator who sent reminders to us to carry out certain tasks.
The company really invested in me during the internshio. Not only was the salary competitive but also people wanted to invest their time in order to educate me on the ways of HSBC and the ways in which the bank worked.
If you showed you did well on the penultimate year internship scheme, the imply that this may lead onto an offer of graduate employment with the bank when you graduate.
The Culture
We only met up infrequently as the internship scheme is spread nationally so interns usually lived far away from each other, however, when we did meet up in London during the internship scheme, we did all go for a drink together to discuss how everything was going.
It was just normal life as the internship scheme was based in my local town.
The nightlife in Guildford is and has always been a lot of fun
During my second week, I was invited to a soft ball game against a local accountancy firm and then after that I have been to a number of networking events.
