The Role
I've had a fantastic year working for SAP.
Working within the largest sales team gave me great visibility to a whole host of interesting and successful colleagues who were constantly willing to coach and mentor me throughout my time at SAP. After a very short time, I felt an integral part of the team, participating in discussions, account planning sessions, forecasting process and a whole host of other activities.
My direct manager was also a senior director within the company so was often very busy, but always made time to support me throughout the year. Working on projects spanning different departments also allowed me to build my network including senior managers from outside my normal business area.
My personal workload was a very good amount. Working within the sales departments you see the workload that some of the team are on in certain periods of the year is extremely high, but in my role it was kept at a good level throughout.
The amount of real responsibility I was given from almost day one was amazing. They really try and get you 'adding value' from the moment you start. Some highlights in terms of responsibility have been; managing the forecast process for a whole industry whilst my manager had been on away, being SAP's delegate whilst organizing an external charity event with a partner company for over 600 people as well as presenting to one of SAP's largest customers during a complex sales cycle.
Due to the lack of overlap between a science degree and the role I was doing, there is no direct knowledge transfer, but the transferable skills i.e. organisational & presentational will be very useful back at University.
The Company
The atmosphere is always very friendly, and the introduction of the open office policy (no offices) meant that even the most senior of people were very easy to approach. Within the sales team though, people were either out seeing clients or working from home which meant less time in the office.
Very comprehensive on-boarding lasting 2 weeks with presentations from all business areas. This gave a great overall of what SAP do and how they are structured. A month hand over from the outgoing placement student was plenty of time to learn everything I was going to need to know.
They are always willing for you to participate in any training sessions or workshops that you would like to do, but it is up to you to find them and enroll. I even had the opportunity to attend a week's training course in Germany with some new starters.

Very appealing with the introduction of the SAP sales academy.
The Culture
Very good. Out most weekends.
Luckily able to live at home, so no rent fees.
London is great for nightlife....just getting home that's difficult.
Played football every week with a mix of placement students and full time employers. Also got to go the Germany for the SAP world cup football tournament in July. Play against all the offices across EMEA over a long weekend.
