The Role
Pretty interesting, but low pay, no fast track for high performers and counsellors were hit or miss. I worked hard to gain trust and responsibilities but felt the placement was too short. The social side was good at the start and the end, however there was a 4 week gap where no one saw each other in the middle.
Initially people seemed quite sceptical that I could do any valuable work, however after my first two pieces went down so well I was recommended for more work, however I always felt very much the intern, rather than a junior but valued member of the team. For instance I was promised to be able to attend a client meeting but this never materialised, despite my follow ups.
Management were supportive and gave guidance. My counsellor was especially good however my two other positions (buddy and intern manager) were very sloppy; I know that it looks good in the firm to say that you've been a buddy or a manager, so it upsets me that they'll take credit for this without having done anything. I contacted them with queries and they were slow to respond - if at all - and their half hearted offers to meet never materialised (they were always 'too busy'). My counsellor on the other hand was amazing, going above and beyond ever when she was busy.
I had a couple of insanely busy days, but the rest were slightly below testing. I could finish my work quickly and then have little to do, but there are plenty of online courses on offer.
I regularly requested to see the benefits of my work in action but I was told I would need to be more senior, however after many requests I was given more responsibilities.
The level of difficulty was quite low compared to my degree, so it really won't help there at all. However it might help in work, as long as I go directly into the areas that I was working on.
The Company
Not wild, but there were a couple of fun events, especially with my alumni network. However the hot desking meant that lots of people were new to your area and it seemed to go down badly when I tried to communicate with newcomers to the area.
It was fairly good throughout, apart from my aforementioned buddy and manager.
Lots of great feedback from my counsellor. She really worked on certain aspects really well. However I think this was because she was exceptional rather than normal, and no one else in the organisation seemed remotely interested in helping me develop.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Not bad, not good.I think I would go back if they offered a fast track scheme. Whether this is likely is unknown to me.
The Culture
It was great at the start and end, but the 4 weeks in between were very bland.
Central London ≠ cheap.
I had a good couple of nights. Restaurants and bars were pretty good, although we had to go further afar (Shoredtich, Camden) for any clubbing, but they were generally fine.
Did some sports socialising but it was outside of their main season. Weirdly there seemed to be no artistic clubs or anything, and I would have liked to get involved in them.
