About You
I found the experience very valuable, both in terms of getting to know the firm but also in meeting likeminded students who I may one day be my colleagues.
Given my limited capacity as an un-qualified law student, my supervisors still found real client matters for me to work on which made me feel I was a valued and integrated member of the team.
For my third week I was sat in a department I had no prior knowledge about, and is known for operating around a very complex area of the law. I explained this to my supervisor who then set aside a lot of time to run me through the basics of the work, and ensured that I felt comfortable with what I was doing. This is also reflective of the rest of the firm - as all fee earners (and support staff) I worked with were always more than happy to give me explanations and guidance when and where I needed it.
I have yet to apply the skills to my degree, however I am sure that the knowledge and analytical skills I have developed will very much assist me in my coming year of study.
The Company
Fantastic. Very well planned out before our arrival - I was given a detailed programme of every presentation and workshop throughout the three weeks.
We enjoyed a vibrant social experience alongside the work. Outings included Bounce table-tennis bar in Holborn and a dinner at The Ivy.
Please see my answer to the earlier question about support. We also attended numerous training workshops and presentations - which were excellently presented and allowed for a lot of discussion with experts in the given field.
While three weeks is a short time - it did give me an opportunity to ask current trainees about life at the firm and get honest answers.
The experience confirmed the firm's already strong reputation as being very open and collaborative as a culture. I felt welcomed by everyone.
Everything Else
I was paid well for the experience. More than my friends who did vac schemes at similar sized firms.
Every day we had some form of networking opportunity. I got to meet a wide range of lawyers from most parts of the firm.
Very good, there was a wide range of activities and not all of which were revolved around alcohol, which allowed everyone to fully join in.
Yes I was keen to enquire about sporting teams and other social events. Me and the other vacation students were even invited to join a trainee cricket game against another firm.
Absolutely.
