The Role
It was tough but I really enjoyed the internship overall, and I felt proud to work for the employer.
In general a lot of effort was put in by HR to make us feel welcome, although it varied between the teams in sales/trading. On one of my rotations I got on extremely well with my colleagues, and was given many projects, whereas in another they didn't really seem interested in talking to me.
Focusing on the better of my two rotations... plenty of support, and they always encouraged me to ask questions. We also had several meetings with senior executives from the company.
Always very busy, lots of projects to work on (mostly spreadsheets) plus running a mock trading book, going to company events and preparing presentations. But this is to be expected of the job.
Although most of the work I was doing involved spreadsheets, these were actively used by the teams I worked for, and I was solving real problems, not just practice ones.
Definitely a good experience of the banking world and how to conduct yourself well in a corporate environment. Picked up lots of economics/business/finance knowledge and other skills. Let's just say if you're not good at excel when you start the internship...you will be by the end!
The Company
The trading floor is an interesting place. It varies very much between the teams. In general the mornings and late afternoons are a bit busy / stressful as this is when the markets are at their peak.
HR do a good job of organising things and were on hand to help with any problems.
Definitely lots of investment. They almost certainly run at a loss taking on interns, but do it deliberately to try and find the best people.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
Great, I got a conditional job offer at the end.
The Culture
Social scene was really good, and although there was competition between interns, most people got on well and socialised in the evenings / on weekends.
London is expensive, but the bank subsidised part of our accommodation payments.
Again good but London is expensive. To be honest sleep was more of a priority.
There were a few sports teams, lectures, volunteer events etc.
