The Role
Overall a very pleasant working environment, supportive colleagues, and a good social scene.
It was nice to get more challenging work from time to time, work which was meaningful and "profit-making".
My assigned buddy introduced me to all the relevant people in each department, and kept in touch regularly throughout the internship.
There were times when I would have to prioritize tasks because of getting a lot of work dumped on me at once. There were a couple of days when half the day there was no work, during which time I was browsing the corporate Intranet.
Quite some given that I was handling assignees' abd private clients' tax affairs while working in People Services. In the other departments, not so much in the sense that I did not interact directly with any client.
It taught me more about corporate life in general rather than giving me any marketable skills.
The Company
A relatively low-stress office environment for a Big Four firm. Good people.
There wasn't much clarity at the start as to who was who, who I would answer to, etc. We were assigned an HR recruiter, a "buddy", and also a "first contact" but
I was invited to attend skills sessions by conference call, and learned plenty during the intensive one-week course on tax law.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Expecting to receive a partner interview, succeeding which I would be on board the Graduate Programme.
The Culture
There were few tax interns in the country, and no office had more than one tax intern. However, I was able to socialise with the audit interns at my office.
I lived near the main campus of the university. The prices were reasonable and the area is buzzing.
My internship fell on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
There was sufficient free time.
