The Role
Due to the limited opportunities I was given, I did not enjoy my internship. If the internship was not paid, and I didn't want a good reference, I doubt I would have completed the internship. I am a motivated, driven person, who frequently asked to take on responsiblity and be given tasks to do, but this to some extent fell on deaf ears.
The majority of my colleagues were very friendly, but I could not say that I was felt valued. Despite the explanation I provided, I think the majority of the management were not aware what my role should be.
My manager was a lovely woman, but very overstretched already, and she didn't have time to help me, and we only had 2 conversations throughout the 7 week placement. Luckily, there was a graduate at my branch for the first 3 weeks, which made a huge difference, and who effectively line managed me. This time was a huge contrast with the rest of my experience.
I was frequently bored, as I wasn't given meaningful tasks, and resorted to tasks such as tidying the stationary room.
I don't feel I was given much responsbility in my placement, and was often itching to do more, and take on more responsbility.
I will be able to talk about some of the experiences in my future career, however I don't think I really developed any skills, apart from slightly more knowledge of banking. There was not much training involved.
The Company
The atmosphere was OK, with occaasional fun events put on. However the opportunities on offer where not as good as on other internships, and I was frequently bored.
The training day at the beginning was very well set up. However once I was in my placement, the only guidance I recieved was from my graduate, and the booklet provided was of litte to no help. The booklet listed tasks to complete which managers felt wouldn't be possible, and it would have been nice to see more structure. In addition, the leader of the internship scheme didn't keep in touch regularly, and I only heard from my 'buddy' once.
The training day at the beginning was useful, but beyone this I didn't feel invested in.
National Travel
I would not choose to work within the organisation following my experience.
The Culture
There was quite a good social scene, but we were very spread out, and it did feel like the vast majority of the events were happening in London.
Lived at home during my internship, so good.
I love the nightlife here, but colleagues weren't willing to go out due to their home commitments.
There were some opportunities within the graduate community, but none of these were practical location-wise
