The Role
Fantastic 6 week experience that I would thoroughly recommend. There was huge variety on the internship, ranging from the work I did to the people that I worked with. The first week was spent in Birmingham with all the other 48 interns from around the UK - this week was SO much fun. BDO put us up in a hotel (a very swanky hotel); by day we learnt the basics of audit as well as vital business skills and by night we went out for dinner, drinks and a dance.
Everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful. I was treated like an employee not a temporary intern.
On my first day I was introduced to my counselling manager (who had previously contacted me numerous times to introduce herself and inform me about the internship); she was exceptionally friendly and caring. We had a weekly meeting to discuss my progress and feedback - however often these meetings were hard to schedule due to us both being on client sites a lot.
I was kept busy 24/7 and never sat there bored or with nothing to do.
I had A LOT of responsibility - at first I was dropped in the deep-end, completing work that 2/3 year graduates do; however I had a lot of help and I learnt huge amounts very quickly. At no point did I do any "secretarial work" or was asked to scan for hours on end; I was always doing work actually related to audit. Obviously I was given some rather tedious tasks, however these were rare and what every graduate must go through anyway.
Everything I learnt regarding audit will not directly help my degree (I am studying Economics and do not do any accounting modules), however I have left the internship with improved interpersonal skills (from interacting with a lot of clients) and excel skills (to which previously had very little experience).
The Company
The Reading office was a lot of fun, everyone seems to have the same motto - work hard and play hard.
Incredibly organised from the word go. Each individual day of my internship was planned from the start.
Everyone wanted to help me with work to help me to learn. There was also one weeks training in Birmingham.

I would love to work for BDO.
The Culture
During the 4 weeks in Reading we didn't go out much, however in Birmingham and the last 2 days in London it was very sociable. In London we had dinner and drinks on a boat on the Thames and then went out in Covent garden.
Everything in Reading is very reasonably priced.
Didn't go out at all during my time in Reading, however we had drinks and food a couple times.
There was a weekend away to Leeds for a football tournament which was great fun and paid for.
