The Role
It was a great experience for me, to see the business first hand and to see how everything works. I learned an awful lot, improved my skills, and met great people.
I definitely felt like they valued my contributions. I felt part of team at all times, and they always included me in discussions and encouraged me to speak which was really good.
I liked that I could ask my manager and colleagues any questions that I had. Being new, I naturally had a lot of questions and it was great that I could ask these without being embarrassed. The support and guidance given was great.
I thought it was the perfect balance of work - I was never too busy nor too not busy. I completed my work on time and always kept track of the work I had to do. My organizational skills improved immensely throughout the duration of the internship.
I was given a mix of things to do during the internship. At times, this involved making some decisions on my own, but on the whole, the rest of the more experienced team made the big decisions, which was understandable. I still got to experience taking some responsibility, though, which was good.
The skills I have developed, as mentioned before have been very useful during the internship, and I will definitely continue using these skills for the last year in my university degree and in my job after that.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was surprising lively. I thought it was going to be dull, but there seemed to be a lot happening some days which made it fun. E.g. Cake sales were good, and took a bit of stress from working away definitely!
The internship was very well organised by the team. I thought the way everything was communicated with us and the quality of the events were especially great. Overall, very well done to the team who made it such an enjoyable experience.
Right from the start where we have an induction, training is emphasised. We can get training during the internship should we want it - just speak to your manager. I took on some, and it was great to just be able to do that in your own time.
From the feedback I gained from my colleagues and manager, it looks like I have a great chance of returning. I would love to return as I loved working at the company and have decided this is what I want to do.
The Culture
The social scene was great. Everyone was in the same boat, so the interns all go to know each other. I made some really good friends and hope to keep in contact with them. We spent a lot of time together during lunches and on events organised by the company and by us.
The cost of living was not very high for me since I was living at home, but I can imagine it would be higher for someone living in a flat. Glasgow is not too expensive a place, though so it should be manageable.
The nightlife in Glasgow is always lively, although you should stick with your friends. There is a lot of choice and the clubs are great, as are the music venues.
A lot of events were organised for us. It was quite surprising to me that they organised that many events, actually, but I was grateful for it. It gave me the opportunity to network with a lot of people and get to know them. Great fun.
