The Role
The work given was relevant and challenging. Also completed a summer project which was of high interest to me.
Colleagues were exceptionally welcoming and were always on hand to help me if I was struggling with a piece of work. They were more than happy to answer any questions I had.
Had weekly catch ups with my project lead where she helped out with any issues I was having and made sure I was getting on okay.
Had a sufficient work load given to me by my peers and during quieter times I was able to work on my project.
Built up responsibility throughout placement. Initially I was taken through the processes but as I got more practice I was capable of doing them myself. I was also allowed to phone clients. I had enough responsibility that I felt they were making good use of my time, but not too much responsibility that I couldn't cope.
Excellent insight into the work a trainee Actuary will do. I have a better understanding of the role I will be taking on when I graduate next year.
The Company
There were numerous social events which were a great opportunity to meet other people from the office. The office itself is open plan and my team had great chat throughout my placement.
Summer project was planned in advance to me starting. Training sessions were also organised mainly in my first week so I wasn't hanging about, I could just get stuck in straight away.
I was allowed to attend team meetings and training sessions alongside the other members of my team and other student actuaries. I felt I was given the same opportunities as my peers despite only being at the firm for a limited time.
Company Parties/Events
Would happily work with the company again. However, an internship does not guarantee a graduate job with the company and - despite performing well in my placement - it appears I will have to go through the entire application process again.
The Culture
End of month drinks were provided by the company. Pub quizzes and general drinks were also organised frequently.
The train through was expensive however I live in Edinburgh but I was placed in the Glasgow office.
Plenty of bars/clubs around the office.
