The Role
Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, I was only able to complete around 7 weeks of the 12 week summer program. Despite this, I have found working at JLR to be enjoyable and my colleagues have been very friendly. It has been a worthwhile experience that I would definitely recommend. However, given it is 12 weeks placement, it does mean that you do not have much of a summer holiday!
Despite being an intern, my colleagues were always friendly and happy to help. I did feel that the work I carried out for them was valued by them and felt a member of the team from the outset.
I had more contact with other staff than my manager but any queries or questions I may have were answered very quickly and clearly. Any time I did not know what I was doing I didn't feel intimidated to ask for help although I would have preferred to have more 1-to-1 time with my manager.
This is very much down to you I feel. Some days you can be very busy and others you can find yourself twiddling your thumbs. I didn't have a project to oversee but If you did, the time you had free would obviously depend upon that.
I acted primarily in a support role so I didn't have as much responsibility as some of my colleagues that weren't absent for long periods. Having said that, the work I did actually mattered and I did feel pressure to deliver a high quality product.
Taking part in a internship is a worthwhile experience and JLR is not exception. Simply being part of a working environment is important and the interpersonal and business acumen you accumulate is very important in the future. The work, whilst not directly related to my degree, did help with my time management and organisational skills - areas in which I had highlighted areas for improvement.
The Company
I worked in a massive open plan office but the atmosphere in our department of 10-12 was generally relaxed. It will differ department to department obviously but I did feel that I could talk to my colleagues and they were not too busy to communicate with other,.
I did feel the organisation was very much down to your department. There was a welcome day event but thereafter you didn't have much contact with the graduate team. There could have been more events such as a mid term presentation to make sure you are getting a worthwhile experience and getting access to computer systems takes a couple of days at least.
Again very much down to yourself. You will be trained on what it necessary for you to succeed in your job role but you can carry out online training and most departments would be happy to support you in any development or training that you may wish to carry out.
The undergraduate scheme offered graduate jobs to a large number of interns this year. The question "Would you support the decision of this undergraduate to return to JLR and enter the graduate scheme," or something along those lines, was asked to your supervisor during the placement end review and a yes would mean you would have a job offer.
The Culture
A lot of interns live in Liberty Point, which is accommodation in Coventry. If you live there then there are always people around but departmental wise social scenes are different. There was a couple of nights out and meals in my department so you could get involved if you wished.
