The Role
Cognito was a fun and agile environment to work in, everyone was very friendly and that made it a great place to work.
You are one of the team at Cognito and treated like any other developer there. From day one you're given real work to do, and although this makes a steep learning curve, it's definitely worth it!
My colleagues were always willing to help me through problems, and help me learn new techniques and concepts if needed. So long as you're not asking the same questions repeatedly, there's no problem!
Most of the time there was enough work. Although the work load wasn't very consistent there was always something to do and I think that's just how a real environment is.
As mentioned before, you are completely one of the team and are given a lot of responsibility. I met with partners, took part in conference calls and most importantly contributed to a large customer product.
There was no "training" per say, but the members of my team helped me learn lots of new concepts. As well as this I got to develop my coding skills, something which has definitely helped me with my coursework now that I'm back at university.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly, with people always happy to help, it was normally a relaxed environment to work in.
Cognito have had lots of placement students in the past, and it shows. Everything was set up for me when I arrived and I had no problems with how my placement was organised.
Cognito put a lot of effort into their placement scheme and they invest in you as a employee throughout. There's no specific training days, but those around you can teach you.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
A lot of industrial placement students come back to Cognito after university, so the job prospects are pretty good!
The Culture
There's not that many students at Cognito but I got along well with those on my year and met up outside of work. There's also lots of lovely people working for the company, so you're bound to make friends who aren't students. Cognito has curry nights and drinks out regularly.
Newbury is pretty expensive to live in. Flats range from about £300-£400 per person (if you share) and drinks on nights out aren't cheap. However, Reading is close and the cost of living is cheaper there, so that is an option.
Newbury has plenty of pubs, but not much in the way of clubs. You can head to Reading on the train easily, and that has a better night life.
There's nights out with friends, curry nights at local restaurants and drinks after.
