The Role
I learnt so much, and enjoyed the busy environment.
My team were fantastic, and made me feel very supported and valued. They were all extremely friendly and although I knew many of them before, made me feel very welcome and part of the team.
They always made sure I knew what I was doing, and helped me every step of the way. Although I had previously worked for CRUK I had never been there long enough to get properly stuck into a task. My managers were extremely supporting and guided me throughout my projects and tasks. Without them I would not have been able to achieve what I have whilst here, and gained some of the key skills I learnt.
I had enough to do, and was kept busy throughout. I took on the task of doing two internships, and so my work was constantly spread between the two. This made sure I always had lots to do and made it feel like I was really starting to experience working life. It taught me a lot of time management and organisation skills that I will continue to use in the future.
One thing I particularly enjoyed about this internship is that I was always given proper tasks. I've heard a lot of friends talk about their internship experience being a drag as they were given meaningless and boring tasks. I was given projects, therefore I really felt like I was contributing to the team and making a difference.
The skills I've learnt have been crucial in helping me get my first job. Communication and social skills were developed throughout which are vital to being successful in the industry. Being challenged with tasks such as cold calls and asks are skills I will take with me to my next job, and benefit me hugely in my success there.
The Company
The office I worked in was very social, and there was always lots going on from birthdays to bake sales. It was a very supportive environment and was clear everyone loved working for CRUK, and were extremely passionate about their job.
I think the internship was extremely well organised. Throughout the 3 months their were lots of event and workshops organised to make sure we got the most out of the internship. From day one everything was explained and it made it very easy to enjoy the time I spent there.
We were given lots of opportunities to visit other departments and managers. Each were happy to help and offer any advice of information about their area of expertise. We were also offered CV and interview training which was extremely useful as I was job hunting during my internship.
I think its definitely something I have considered and I would love to stay within in the building as long as it was the right job. It's a fantastic company to work for, and so supportive of any future prospects. I will continue looking at the internal job board!
The Culture
Really good. A select group of interns were always organising social outings. Unfortunately due to external commitments I was not able to attend many of these, but the opportunities were definitely there!
Its central London, so was never going to cheap, but we were able to find some cheapish bars, and a lot of the restaurants did some good deals during the week.
Good there are lots of quirky bars, and I was based very central so it was easy to get to other places should we have wished to. Having been not particularly familiar with the area before, I am leaving with lots of 'favourite cafes and bars'.
Yes, with working for a charity there were lots of volunteer opportunities at both day and night events. It was great to have this opportunity as it meant getting involved with other teams, and finding out more about what they did.
