The Role
I found that I really enjoyed the internship and I didn't find it much of a struggle as everything was clearly explained.
The colleagues I worked with were all welcoming and friendly and tried to make my experience enjoyable.
I was given guidance by everyone that I worked with regarding the work that needed doing and the tasks I was given.
I found that there was a good range of meetings and work planned. I occassionally didn't have very much to do but this was normally towards the end of the day when there wasn't much point in starting something new.
I felt as though I was given just enough responsibility during my internship as I was left to write reports and send emails to clients but it was always under the supervision of someone in a higher position to myself.
I definitely believe that the skills I have used during the internship will assist me in the future when I come to apply for graduate schemes and in the workplace. I feel a lot more confident talking on the phone to clients and communicating with colleagues. In addition the report writing skills I have developed will definitely be useful when I come to write my own reports.
The Company
The majority of the time everyone in the office remained focussed on their work. This didn't make it dull but meant that there wasn't much socialising between different departments.
I found that the internship was extremely well organised and I knew from the beginning which teams I would be working with and what was required of me. I also found the handbook and checklist useful.
Most of the colleagues I worked with invested their time in me by explaining various things over the course of the internship. I felt that perhaps, as I was based outside of London, there was less planned for me e.g. no presentations or socials were organised. However, the numerical and written tests were good practice for when I come to do them at assessment centres in January.
I had a very positive appraisal at the end of my internship where I was actively encouraged to apply for the graduate scheme and was told that I would be recommended for the assessment centre. However, the graduate recruitment process will still be tough and very competitive so I hope to get a job with Savills but this is definitely not a guarantee.
The Culture
Although I went out for lunch on one occassion and drinks after work on a couple of occassions there didn't seem to be much of a social scene. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I was the only intern and there isn't a huge amount of graduates in the office and some of those who are here are busy preparing for their APC.
Manchester city centre is quite expensive in terms of restaurants and bars but nowhere near as expensive as London. There is also the option of going to less pricy restaurants/bars if you want.
Manchester has a great nightlife with plenty of bars and clubs in and around the city centre.
I didn't get involved in any activities outside of work as I didn't really feel that there were that many opportunities. There was a cricket match organised but it had to be cancelled due to weather and I didn't hear about any other opportunities to get involved.
