The Role
The IBM placement scheme can be brilliant when it works, but unfortuately, my job role was very poor, and as I commuted to work, I didn't benefit from the brilliant social life of the IBM placements.
As always, it varied from person to person, but on the whole, I felt like a valued team member.
I flagged my poor job role early on in the placement, yet after 13 months, it still wasn't changed.
It got busier towards the end, but for the first half of the placement, I had very little to do.
Some tasks were very important to the business, but most were admin style tasks.
Unless I return to IBM, I do not feel I benefitted a great deal.
The Company
My year was probably the worst there will be for a placement student. Many people left/were moved on, including the whole of our management team. It was a very peculiar year, but I do think it was a rare occurance.
There were two sides to management of placement students. One side was the manager you worked for, the other was within Foundation (the team who deal with and manage placements and graduates). They can be very good independantly, but they do not communicate enough.
Many different opportunities,
Flexi Time
Working from home
I would return to IBM, but not within the same department.
The Culture
If you lived with the other placement students, the social scene was brilliant.
I didn't live in the area so not sure, but I dont think Portsmouth is too bad.
Portsmouth is a Uni city, but not the best in teh world.
There was always something to do.
