The Role
I have throroughly enjoyed my internship as it has always been something that I wanted to attempt. I enjoyed the dynamics of the industry and the fact that you are presented with new challenges on a daily basis. Some days may be tough, but that also forms part of the learning process.
Although I would consider this question as quite a difficult one to ask, given the short period that I have been part of the team, I do believe that my colleagues valued me to a certain extent with regards to the assignments that they had required me to fulfil.
My line manager and fellow colleagues have been very supportive throughout the internship. Given our limited experience as interns, they were happy to assist us when we had stumbled upon a problem or had questions to ask on our assignments.
Work has never really calmed down, not even during the summer which is what would naturally be expected to occur. Given the fact that it has been quit an active year for the industry and my team, I have found myself quite busy throughout the day.
I would say that for an intern, I had much more responsibility than I had expected. I had the opportunity to gain exposure and insight from senior people in the team as well as across the bank.
I believe that the most important thing that I have managed to obtain from this internship had been the development of an array of skills, both technical as well as qualitative. I have become more competent with MS Office and more specifically Excel, whilst at the same time I gained hands on experience with new business specific software packages and platforms such as Bloomberg, FactSet, etc. The internship has built upon my knowledge of finance and the investment banking industry and given the nature of my team I have gained large amounts of knowledge in different sectors, ranging from Consumer and Retail to Industrials, Mining and Technology.
