The Role
As a chemical engineer, I was placed at Centrica Storage and did a lot of work which was directly relevent to my degree.
The process engineering work I did was important work that they would otherwise be doing themselves. They gave very good support and appreciated the work I did
Any question I had was answered by my line manager or other helpful people but I also had a lot of time where I had to get on with things myself, which was good. It helped me learn to handle things on my own but the support was always there if I needed it.
Occasionally couldn't progress without speaking to people who were busy/away but the vast majority of the time I always had something to be getting on with.
The work I was doing was very useful to the business and I was allowed to walk round the terminal on my own and decide how I wanted to approach my work. I presented my work to the terminal manager at the end so I had a lot of responsibility,
Working as a process engineer at a gas terminal puts my chemical engineering degree into perspective in the real world so in my final year of uni I'll be able to associate my studies with the work I did at the terminal. The training and skills developed has made me more employable and much more confident.
The Company
Everyone was friendly and had a sense of humour, everyone was approachable. Often people were busy or out of the office so sometimes it was quite quiet.
I had to wait a long time to find out where I would be working and what my role was but the accommodation was arranged and paid for by the company and all I had to do was turn up. Once I was there, I knew exactly what I was doing and had regular meetings with my line manager to catch up and ask questions about things I'm finding difficult.
Expenses were paid for 2 training days in Windsor. Apart from that, personal development was done through choosing the right projects and objectives for the placement. Often it was very much up to myself to ensure my personal development and to take responsibility for it but my line manager was very supportive of it and helped me to set objectives

Company Parties/Events
As an engineer, you would have to move location every year and all locations are in the north/in scotland. However a job for life is available and the work is very important, interesting and the wages are competitive on the grad scheme.
The Culture
Engineers often get put in locations with few other interns/grads so there are a few people to socialise with but I often went home on weekends instead. 80% of the interns were in Windsor/Staines and the social life there looked amazing.
Medium-low as I was in Hull. Most people go to Staines/Windsor which I expect is very expensive
Good, there are a lot of bars/pubs and a few good places to go out.
The grads had a good social life and were inclusive so I often got involved with what they were doing.
