The Role
I had applied for Group Technology, but was placed withing "billing" so I didn't really get to work on the tech that I was expecting. But my team really tried to give me interesting and manageable tasks to do.
Everyone was very friendly, if a little busy! It was difficult to get help if I needed it, but people definately tried to make time for me.
At the start, plently of chats were arranged with other people in my team so I could get a good grasp of what they did. My manager was incredibly helpful. Though I was thrown in the deep end with some tasks, if I really needed help there was always somewhere to find it.
Given plenty of work to do. Sometimes I felt I wasted a lot of time was spent waiting for people to reply to emails - but this also gave me time to meet/network lots of people in the business and explore things that interested me.
I was given my own tasks which I was responsible for managing and completing.
Learnt to write clear emails and use excel macros. Maybe not so useful as I study physics, but I suppose they are all transferable skills. I would just warn that if you apply for "Group Technology", you can be placed in ANY area of tech - be that development, business analysis, business continuity management etc. You will not necessarily learn to code.
The Company
People were very happy but busy. In my team people were quite senior so went straight home after work to spend time with families.
First week was vrey slick - lots of talks and networing events as an introduction to the bank and to finance. After that we were handed over to our managers - so depending on the manager, there was either plenty to do, or not so much.... Had plenty of networking events throughout the internship (and intern evening drinks), as well as a tech speakers series with representatives from accross different business areas.
There were lots of chances to meet people and learn about IT. Also plenty of resources online for learning whatever you wanted/ needed.
Subsidised Canteen
The firm is really keen on recruiting graduates from their intern scheme.
The Culture
Lost track of some of the interns in the other areas of the bank, but always people to go out with if you wanted to.
It was london.
London!
Did some volunteering, could have done lots of that. There are lots of clubs at UBS - from yoga to knitting to mountaineering.
