The Role
The work was interesting and challenging. Also the intern community was very social!
There was always tasks to do and none of them were ever menial. I was given my own project and I feel like I was able to produce something genuinely useful.
My mentor and manager had been assigned plenty of time for me and were always happy to help.
There was always plenty of work to do. However there was no pressure to work long hours.
I was given my own project and so was very much responsible for that.
Whilst not overly relevant to my degree I have learnt a lot which will be very useful in perusing a career in software engineering.
The Company
It was generally relaxed. There was always a focus on work but equally it was far from complete silence. Everyone was friendly and got on very well.
There are a large number of interns so it is a well oiled machine. Houses are provided for those needing them and there were plenty of social activities to make everyone feel welcome.
They assign you a mentor with a large chunk of their time dedicated to helping you out. This makes all the difference, especially to those with little experience in programming. Training is on the job rather than in classes which is great.

For those with one year or less left at university it is common for them to offer a interview day towards the end of your internship. Having done this it is not uncommon to receive a job offer based on this.
The Culture
There were a large number of interns. Living in a company house was very social but on top of this the interns often organised events together. Within the company there are a large number of sports teams as well as other clubs.
The company accommodation was very cheap for the area. There was not a huge amount to do in the area but it was only a short train ride from Central London.
In the local area there are a few nice pubs, restaurants and (apparently) bars and clubs. Although with London being so close this would be the better option for a night out.
There was an endless number of sports clubs and other activities both during and after work.
