    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the placement. The type of work I was doing was relevant to my degree and a future career. I got to learn new skills, for example python, while creating a useful product for ARM. It was very satisfying to have worked on an actual product and learned new skills.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was often working by myself as the project was quite self contained, although I did work with another employee for some of the time which was a good experience. In general everyone I met at the company was friendly, and there was a good intern culture. Several tasks involved me having to go to talk to people in the company and get help from them, everyone I talked to was really helpful.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers and supervisors were helpful and accessible. They were also receptive of ideas I had about the product and were happy to help with any problems I had. They were away on holiday for some of the summer which made it more difficult to work productively, although this is to be expected during the summer.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My managers were good at making sure I had enough work to do, and that it wasn't too difficult. They were usually accessible if I had any problems, but I could progress at my own rate and do the work as thoroughly as I wanted. The project was well described with reasonable goals which meant I always knew what I was working towards.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was working on an internal tool which would be used in production to produce documentation. I was the only one working on the tool itself, but I had help from a number of people. I was happy that I was given responsibility for the development, and had a reasonable influence over how the tool worked, and was able to implement my own ideas.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned a number of skills while working here, mainly coding in python, and also a large amount of knowledge that should be relevant to my individual project for university. I feel well prepared for the studies that I am doing next year, and some skills that will be useful beyond university into my career and the rest of my life.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was reasonably focused, although people generally got on well. Because I was mostly working by myself I didn't get to interact with the other people in the office that much though.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. ARM takes many interns every year and is very good at giving them good projects, organising events for them, and generally helping to find places to rent or answering any other questions. There were also a couple of intern events which were good.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I recieved a small amount of training in the skills that I would need for the work placement. I could also ask for help with something whenever I needed, but the training didn't go much beyond anything I would use on the internship. There were doughnut sessions where speakers would do a presentation about various parts of ARM. These were interesting and useful to gain insight into the different departments and how they operate.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I enjoyed working here and it would definitely be a good environment and company to work in after graduation.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there was a group of around 15 interns who often went to the pub, went out, or did day trips. We went punting, ice skating, to clubs, in general there was a very good social scene.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home for the duration of the placement so didn't have to pay rent. Cambridge isn't cheap but it's not too expensive, and there are cheap places to go. We often ate out and went to the cinema and most places are reasonably priced.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Cambridge isn't renowned for its nightlife. As I was living at home which was half an hour drive away, I could go out often, but we went out once and I crashed on a friends floor. We often went to the pub after work, and there are plenty of pubs in Cambridge.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • ARM has several clubs that it runs, and there is plenty to do in Cambridge as well.

    4/5
