The Role
The internship was a very enjoyable experience indeed. The work was very engaging and I learned a great deal. Further to this, the people that I worked with in the office were fantastic and always helped if it was needed. I also enjoyed the out-of-office activities that were arranged as part of the internship. For example, all of the interns participated in a CSR day at a school in London where we helped paint and tidy the school. This was good not only because we were helping the community, but we also got a chance to network with others, which is a large part of the business world. Further, a training course at the company's training centre was arranged, and this was really beneficial.
Clearly I didn't have as much knowledge as the people that I was working with, however I was always given work to do, and this was work which actually went towards audits, which I found really encouraging.
I was well organised and people were always checking in on me to make sure that I had something to do and that I was enjoying it. That said, I never felt that people were breathing over my shoulder, which clearly I wouldn't have responded well to.
Aside from perhaps one day I was always very busy, which i really liked. Most days I would be at clients' sites from 9 until 5.30, and I would be working constantly for this time. I think this was good as it allowed me to learn as much as possible in the limited time that I was on the internship.
I was given real work that was going towards real audits. That said, all work was checked over, according to company policy.
It's difficult to say at this stage whether the internship has benefitted me in terms of my degree. However I would say other skills, such as my communication have been developed in a way that could not be done in any place other than the office environment, so for that I am very grateful.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and I always felt very included. That said, the office was often very empty. I think this is for two reasons: The first is that I did my internship over a period where a lot of people were taking holidays. Also, because the office is predominantly audit staff, many were out at clients' sites the majority of the time.
I was pleased with the way that it was organised, especially considering that this was the first year that my office had had an intern.
All interns were sent on a training course at the company's training centre. I was very impressed that the company was investing so much time and money into its interns as early on as they were. I think this speaks volumes for the company's commitment to training, and its internship programme.
I was offered a final interview with them. I attended the interview and am pleased to say that I secured a job, subject to gaining a 2:1 next June.
The Culture
I was the only student there.
Relatively cheap place to live. Average prices for going out.
It's okay, probably the same as any medium-sized town.
Emails were constantly sent about participation in different things. From quizzes, to meals to sports events, there was always something happening.
