The Role
Overall I enjoyed my internship. I had the opportunity to work on a range of tasks, and to participate in several activities with the other interns.
I think my colleagues considered me to be a useful member of their team, and they appreciated the work I did.
Whenever I was given a new task to work on, I would be given guidance on it to get me started. My manager was almost always on hand to answer any questions I might have about the task.
I was given more than one task to work on concurrently, which helped my productivity by allowing me to switch to another task if I got bored of the one I was doing.
I was mostly left to work on the tasks as I saw fit, with my manager and other colleagues stepping in every so often to help guide my work in the right direction.
Although the main topic of the internship - technical writing - does not directly pertain to my degree course - computer science - I do think that the experience it has given me will be helpful both academically and in later life, by encouraging me to think carefully about how I communicate ideas to other people.
The Company
The atmosphere was generally quite quiet and focused, but there were some opportunities for relaxation and informal interaction. The office had a well-equipped kitchen and break room.
The internship was mostly organised very smoothly and efficiently, especially considering the number of interns that the company takes on. There were some issues concerning holiday arrangements but these were very quickly ironed out.
My manager and colleagues helped me get to grips with the software and infrastructure I needed to do my work effectively, and pointed me in the direction of resources I could use to educate myself further.

I would be quite interested to work with ARM in future, but since this is my first internship of this kind I think it would probably be best to gain a wider experience across the technology industry before making a commitment.
The Culture
Although I was not often able to join my fellow students in social activities, it seemed clear to me that the social scene among them was very active.
Living costs were particularly low for me since I was able to rent accommodation through my college at university. The cost of socialising was slightly higher but nevertheless reasonable.
I participated in very little nightlife over the course of the internship so I cannot really comment. I know that during the university term, however, the nightlife is very active.
Yes, such as the beer and pizza evening, the TechComms cake gatherings and the company barbecue. There were also lots of activities on offer which combined work with leisure, such as the donut sessions.
