The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement. The work was varied and stimulating. The work environment is friendly and interesting. There was lots of opportunity to network with other interns and full time employees, and I was able to build good friendships over the course of the placement. I also enjoyed being able to get to know more about different areas of the bank.
After just a couple of weeks at the company, I was given real project tasks and I was treated as a full member of the team even though I had lots to learn. I was encouraged to propose and challenge ideas and discuss my work with colleagues.
On occasions people were very busy and it was hard to get their time. However, this was uncommon and when I was stuck, colleagues and management were understanding and supportive in giving me pointers and hints to help me find solutions.
It varied quite a bit. I never had nothing to do but some days were quite quiet whilst on others I had lots to get on with. This variety taught me the importance of time management and prioritisation.
I was given real tasks and gained experience working with a variety of parties both internally and externally. I presented the work I had done a number of times.
The networking skills I have developed will be invaluable. I have also improved other soft skills such as navigating a large business and presenting. My understanding of both financial services and IT has increased significantly.
The Company
Friendly and welcoming to newcomers. People are also passionate about the work they do and the employees are from very diverse backgrounds.
The support from my team was excellent and the extra events planned were very helpful. However, these were sometimes cancelled and at networking events there were often too many people in a small venue or too many interns to get to talk to senior staff in the bank.
The firm invested in me heavily, I was given responsibility and lots of constructive feedback. I was often given tasks which included learning to improve my understanding of the business. My manager and team gave me lots of advice on how to navigate the company, how to make the most of the internship and general advice on pursuing a career in financial services.

I don't know yet but I'm fairly confident that I'll be offered a place on the graduate scheme for next year. If an offer does come, I'll definitely take it and look forward very much to starting full time!
The Culture
Yes, it can take a while to get to know people as there are so many interns but the induction week was very helpful in facilitating the building of friendships. The other interns are social and we often had lunch together and socialized after work. I hope to keep in contact with quite a few of them.
It's Canary Wharf so everything is expensive but I expected this.
I don't really go out much but I hear it's very good. There are lots of nice bars and restaurants in Canary Wharf.
Yes, there were quite a few social activities for the interns and the recruiters really encouraged us to get to know each other. There were also opportunities to socialize with my team.
