The Role
Found the internship very enjoyable; interesting work and interesting people.
Everyone very keen to give you their time, be that to help with work or just to discuss career options with you. Made to feel part of the team from day 1.
My line manager assisted me when I needed help with things and was extremely helpful during the early stages when things were new to me.
Due to the nature of my lab-based project, I had a lot of time waiting around and struggled to usefully fill all the time.
I was given ownership of the work I was doing but was not given any additional responsibility, which felt the correct level at my stage.
Lab experience very valuable, team skills useful. The most helpful thing was meeting people working for Shell and talking to them about career options.
The Company
Office atmosphere generally good. People happy in their work. However due to flexible desk policy and people working from home, the office was occasionally very empty.
Very well organised. Onboarding worked well and I was trained quickly in my first week to be able to start my project in the start of week 2. There was a clear structure of onboarding, project planning, mid-term review and report and presentation at the end. This was clear from the start.
There wasn't much training which was relevant to my post but I was given all the necessary training. In terms of personal development, the company were fantastic. They were happy for me to spend a great deal of time finding out about different areas of the business by meeting with others outside of the team I was in, be that in Aberdeen where I was based or over the phone to people in London. I had meetings with the recruitment team for my university and was given a lot of information about career options with the company in the future. People were very willing to discuss things with me and answer any questions

The Culture
Yes, there was a network for interns. Unfortunately I missed a few of the events but there were plenty available.
Accommodation quite expensive, other stuff generally cheap.
I didn't go out but others did and enjoyed it.
Yes, lots of corporate events to do outside work. Anything else was left for us to organise
