The Role
Atkins internships live up to their reputation. The best aspect of my internship was the opportunity to work on many different, and most frequently, challenging projects.
The several social events organised in the first two weeks of my internship enabled me to get to know my colleagues better.
Everyone in the office was always willing to help and give advice. The weekly team meetings made sure that I was on track and my work progressed as scheduled. Atkins support teams were particularly helpful and gave guidance for any kind of problem.
It varied. Most days were very busy especially during the period when I was working on more than 1 project and had to attend project meetings.
High responsibility was given straight away. I was assigned to do check calculations on my second day and by the end of the 3rd week I was working on multiple projects.
The practical knowledge gained has strengthened my theoretical thinking and will thus improve my academic performance.
The Company
There was a very friendly environment in the small Cambridge office.
The Employee Induction Guide given on the first day makes sure that there is a fair amount of organisation during the internship. Most of the typical induction activities need to be completed and checked off during the first week.
Atkins has a large digital library and training videos that are available to all employees.
Highly appealing.
The Culture
Yes I got the chance to get to know everyone in the several social events.
Cambridge is very cheap to live in if you are studying in the University of Cambridge since you are normally offered accommodation in your college. The office itself is located 13 minutes away by bus from the centre of the Town. There is a Co-operative food store really close to the office which has good prices for a quick lunch.
Cambridge is full of tourists during the summer vacation who were filling the various bars and clubs in the market area.
Yes, only a couple during my 6-week internship.
