    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was a Direct Giving and Legacy Marketing intern which meant working across two departments. This meant my role was a varied mix of marketing stats and data, creative designing and written communications (Copy, newsletters etc). I really liked having this diversity as I gained a range of skills. I came to this internship wanting to change career so this role didn't pigeon hole me but broaden my skills loads!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I can't rate them highly enough here. Awesome people, whose commitment to cake, my welfare and the CRUK cause was unbeatable.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • See above for how great they were, but support-wise, really helpful too. CV advice, making sure I understood what I had to do, and loads of general encouragement.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Always had plenty of things to do but never had any need to leave later than 5.30.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At CRUK you will be project managing one or two specific projects during the 12 weeks which is great. It means you have real responsibility and get the experience of seeing how all the bits of a project in a charity fit together. Mine was a marketing project designing and implementing 3 different pieces of creative materials and gave me the full picture of the process of a marketing campaign. I haven't given 10 here simply because there were days when I was inputting data or filling, but I enjoyed those days too and they were vital to the department who really appreciated me doing them.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I had already finished my degree when I started but I wanted to move career. For me getting this internship was a key way for me to move on from my previous job by gaining a new perspective and some new skills in the charity sector. I can now look at charity jobs and think 'yep I meet the requirements' rather than 'I wish I met them' so, in essence, job done!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • relaxed but committed. There always seemed to be cake around to nibble on and plenty of tea and coffee. Loads of comfy sofas nearby for catch-ups with my manager and plenty of 5min breaks in the kitchen with colleagues for a chat.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The best things were the two induction days at the start, It meant that I started feeling really prepared. Also, dealing with CRUK over email before I started was easy, organised and friendly. There is a great CV workshop as well as a mentoring scheme so that you can chat through any worries, concerns, thoughts and questions with a CRUK employee, although I think this scheme could have been better planned out and organised. The intern manager who oversees everyone, is really lovely. If I ever had a question, wanted advice about the way I had done a job app, or simply had an idea to put forward, I knew I could pop over, say hi and have a quick chat.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Extremely well. I went along to training days, was given tours of the print factory who do CRUK marketing materials, met people for inductions across at least 8 teams, attended department meetings, had weekly catch-ups with 2 separate members of my team and was given job advice.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Travel loan

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • CRUK really values having people on-board who understand the cause and the way they work and there are plenty of people here who have gone on to get jobs. All sorts of jobs come up and it's definitely worth going for them as insider knowledge is apparently a great advantage.

    3/5

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah. People were friendly and we went for drinks most weeks. It was really nice to be able to switch off and share a beer and a chat. We have our own Facebook group for keeping in touch too.
