The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. It was a great insight into the actuarial career. Everyone was really friendly and supportive. There was always something to do and no 2 days were the same. There were also many events outside of work.
People were happy to give you work and I felt trusted to get on with it. Everyone made me feel like part of the team rather than just an intern and everyone was always happy to give me feedback on any work I had done.
I had a mentor and supervisor which was great. They were both really supportive and always happy to help/stop what they were doing to help. It's great to have a point of contact to ask for help or to ask any questions you have and they could answer any questions I had. I had a mid-program review meeting to let me know how I was getting on and a final program review meeting.
There was always something to do which was great! At times when there wasn't much work, there were many exercises to get on with and if you asked the team for work someone would always have something for you to do.
At first there was a lot of training which is actually good because you get an insight into the job and it is a steep learning curve. I feel that over the 8 week I was given a lot of responsibility and got involved in real client work as well as doing exercises.
Doing the internship has helped me make a decision that I want to go into an Actuarial career. Getting an insight into the career and experience in the environment will assist me in the future as well as developing professional skills.
The Company
The office environment is great - everyone is so friendly and happy to help! There were many social events over the 8 weeks from lunches to pub crawls to sports events to weekends away.
The internship was really well organised. From the application process to the actual internship I thought everything went really smoothly. There was 2 training days at one office with all of the other interns which was great. Then having a mentor and supervisor helps to keep things organised throughout the time. You also get a time-line of when you are expected to do different exercises by which is great for organisation.
In the first 2/3 weeks there are a lot of training sessions which is great. It makes you feel like they are really investing in you. Mine were also given by different members of the team so you could meet all of the team which was great. When doing work at your desk, everyone was happy to come and help or to give feedback which made me feeling like they wanted to invest in me. Furthermore, the reviews help you develop personally.

I hope to return as a graduate.
The Culture
As mentioned above there was always something going on outside of work and this included a wide range of activities.
I commuted to work but I believe it to be above average.
It is not a big city, but it is good for a town and suited what I wanted.
As mentioned above there was always something going on outside of work and this included a wide range of activities.
