The Role
I really enjoyed the experience. I feel like I learnt so much over the 8 weeks and it confirmed my aspirations to follow an actuarial career.
I worked in a small team and so really felt like a valued part of the team. I was given help and feedback wherever necessary and everyone was welcoming and a pleasure to work with.
I had both a mentor and a supervisor who were great at offering support and guidance, and at being there whenever I had any questions. They made sure that I had settled in well and that I was enjoying and getting the most out of the experience.
Some days were busier than others. It helped me to develop time management skills and I was encouraged to ask when I had time to take on more work or when I had too many responsibilities. Throughout the internship, we were assigned projects to complete and so if we did have a less busy period, we could do some work on these.
I was given many important tasks to complete during my placement, which would either be sent out to clients or were useful for the rest of the team.
The Company
The office is generally quiet and everyone gets on with their own work, which is great for concentrating on tasks. However, we could ask questions at any point and everyone was friendly and up for a coffee break and chat!
It was very well set up. We had a detailed plan and pack given to us on the first day, which included training sessions and presentations and an exercise every week which we were to complete. We had two reviews throughout.
The team were happy to give up some of their time to show us how to complete a task, carry out a training session or anything else which would benefit our development and learning.
The company are looking to offer graduate roles to a couple of us (out of three), however it is not certain. The team is looking to grow and so employment prospects look good.
The Culture
Great! There are Friday pub outings, sports tournament to get involved in (netball, football, cricket...), team lunches and events. We also, as summer students, were required to organise two socials over the summer which were such good fun! Everyone was up for socialising after work and getting to know us.
Expensive, but I'm used to living in London so I am used to it! Plus the rest of the team were happy to buy rounds of drinks!
It's London. Enough said!
Yes. We went to a talk at SIAS Staple Inn for student actuaries, got involved in sports tournaments and attended the multiple social events.
