The Role
really enjoyed the variety of job roles I was able to experience throughout the duration of the placement, for example; Sales, Stock Control, Property and Warehouse. Naturally some I enjoyed more than others, but I found it all to be a great learning experience which I will take from this.
In every department I worked in, although it was only two months in each I felt valued and appreciated from day one.
Most of my training was taught to me 'on the job' therefore working alongside the other supervisors and managers, which is a very direct but encouraging learning experience therefore support and guidance is always given. I was never afraid to ask. You also report weekly to your Regional Training Manager and the Undergraduate Training & Development Manager which makes the programme very credible, and regular networking is important in business.
In retail every day is busy no matter what department you are in. In departments such as Sales and Warehouse where your work is more integrated within a team you need to show proactive leadership skills therefore keeping busy is essential.
In almost every department I worked in I was given a lot of responsibility very early on. In all cases it was more responsibility than I thought a placement student would get within such a short period of time in the department (two months), however this was brilliant as you can rise to the challenge. The placement modules are very well structured with the opportunity to work to higher positions and gain more responsibility and experience throughout the placement. Such as in Sales you can work up to a Store Manager position!
The Lidl placement has without a doubt been my highest position of work experience so far, I believe that this alone has given me a wide insight into how a successful international company operates. This will no doubt help me link practical knowledge to theory within my final year of studies. The continuous training and develop I have been given throughout the placement are transferable skills which I will use in any business environment.
The Company
Busy but friendly in all departments.
An amazing programme with a clear structure and opportunity for you to choose what business area you want to work in for your four module choices! As well as set national projects and two weeks experience in the Head Office in London!
I gained one on one training within each department I worked in. But also at the National Meetings we had external training from Reed Business School and I was able to gain my BII personal alcohol license qualification through Lidl as well!

Very appealing as you know the company's structure and acumen which seem very attractive at this present time.
The Culture
At National Meetings and the two weeks Head Office experience, the social scene was always fun!
Living cost was very cheap near to the RDC and joining a sports club outside of work I found to be a great way of socialising.
Near the RDC there is not a lot. But all RDCs are near enough to bigger city's and our time at head office in London the nightlife was vibrant.
Occasionally we had a department night out e.g. Christmas party's.
