The Role
My internship has been absolutely great. I was placed with the Hotel Valuation team and although these placements were organised randomly, it was the perfect position for me as it gave me experience in commercial property which I hadn't previously had experience in. I had mentioned in my application that I wanted to get some commercial experience so I am really grateful to have had that. I also think the position was particularly relevant to me as a language student as the team has considerable dealings internationally. The team were extremely helpful and welcoming, making it very easy to integrate. I did enjoy the work I was doing but I am fairly sure I want to be working in agency rather than valuations.
I felt very valued mainly because I fitted in so well with the team. I was very pleased to have been given my own projects and my colleagues always thanking me for any work I did which made my efforts feel much appreciated. The exposure I got was great given that I was only there for a short time (1 month) and the fact that I am not from a property background didn't hold me back in carrying out the work I needed to do as any questions I had were answered by someone in the team. Outside of my immediate team, Savills as a whole welcomed all of the interns unbelievably well. I felt extremely valued right from the moment I made my first application to the company and I know this will have a huge impact on my career choices placing Savills at the top of my list.
I had help whenever I needed it and not only by my team but also others in the company- it's a vast company but feels extremely familiar. I met various people within the company and everyone was extremely helpful. I was able to extend my internship by two weeks to work in another team just from going and speaking to the right people.
I always had something to do and my team were very conscious to make give me interesting and varied work.
I was surprised how much responsibility I was given. I felt the team quickly put trust in me and I was doing the same work that graduates in the team were doingwhich was reassuring, I sent my work to those I was reporting to and their feedback was helpful.
Very much so, I know a lot of the work I did will be the same work that I will be doing when I come to do my APC so it was really good practice and a good insight to the kind of things I will be doing in my training.
The Company
Fantastic. Savills is a wonderful company and there is a very friendly atmosphere amongst colleagues. Even though it is a huge company everyone is very welcoming and I never felt I wasn't able to speak to someone due to a hierarchy, that for me is an extremely important feature for a company and one that will be a huge factor when it comes to deciding on my future employer. The graduates were also great in making us feel welcome. I played softball one evening with them and we went on a few social events together. Again, it's something that makes me want to work for Savills to know that there is this strong social and supportive atmosphere in place.
Perfectly organised. The HR team are really efficient and always at hand whenever I needed to ask them anything. They oraganised departmental overviews as well as a number of social events giving us the opportunity to network and understand the company in more depth. We were also encouraged to integrate with the graduates who were a great bunch.
Very much so, we got paid quite well for our work and a lot was done for us. It is clear that Savills is as much interested in appealing to graduates as vice versa which is nice to know given how competitive the job environment is. The job decision making process may only be seen as a one-way thing amongst some companies - this is not the case with Savills.
