The Role
Enjoyable at the start but became more of a struggle as the weeks went on.
People make an effort to give you work where you can add value etc. Interns are clearly a valued part of the business.
Varied. In my first desk rotation I was given a lot of support and guidance. There was much less so on my second desk, which was dominated by very senior and very junior people with little in between to go to for help. However, my first line manager continued to check in and provide support throughout the internship.
Normally a good level. As one would expect, you start off with little to do as your understanding is limited but the amount of work increases over the placement.
This varied. On my first desk, everything was double and tripled checked which to be honest it should be as in 4 weeks you don't have time to learn everything. On my second desk I feel I was given almost too much responsible for certain projects, given the short time we were there for and the fact that we leave after the placement and so other people need to have a handle on your projects when you go.
This depends on where one ends up. The more general skills the placement provides, such as exposure to work, excel skills etc will be useful regardless. If converting to a graduate role, the experience gained on the desk would be, I imagine, invaluable.
The Company
Pretty relaxed and friendly, especially as August is not a busy time of year.
Generally well organised. A number of events, mid way meetings etc.
We had a training week as well as excel training during the placement, some networking events and some additional events where we got a chance to learn about different areas of the business. Materials were also provided to learn on the desk.
Personally not planning to return.
The Culture
The organised events were not always up to standard but generally there was a lot of socialising by the intern year.
Personally lived at home. Travel very expensive. Accommodation, food etc in London very expensive.
Lots of bars etc. Busy area of London.
Sporting activities sometimes arranged, pay day drinks on a monthly basis etc.
