The Role
It's an amazing place, with some lovely people and a very nice office environment.
Everyone was very friendly, and as we were given real work to do from the very first week it felt like you were making a difference to the project - especially when you could see that something you'd introduced was helpful to other people.
You are expected to do a lot of independent work, but if you have an issue with anything people will always be willing to help you out and explain things, or even sit there and work through problems with you.
My case was perhaps unusual, as I was working on a larger project that they are used to - this meant I had a rather choppy workflow (through no fault of Softwire). As such, I alternated between being really busy and having nothing to do - though a fair amount of time was spent in the "perfect balance" zone.
I was trusted and treated pretty much as another employee, just given extra support if I asked for it.
The skills were immensely useful; I now have a far better understanding of what it means to work on a software development team, and also feel that my ability to program as significantly improved. I also have experience dealing with 3rd party contractors and customers, which will be useful no matter which industry I end up in.
The Company
The office is really relaxed, and everyone was very friendly and social.
We just fitted into the existing team structure.
The company was very supportive, with a large collection of books relevant to the technologies we were working with that we were encouraged to read. People were always happy to explain things in more detail if I needed it.

Company Parties/Events
I was told to apply here if I ever wanted a job in the industry - my current plans are slightly different so I don't know whether I would have actually got one!
The Culture
I can't comment on the social scene specifically amongst fellow placement students - we all fitted in to the general social scene.
N/A - I commuted in from home.
N/A - I commuted in from home.
The company regularly organised social events, ranging from boardgame / film nights to meals out at restaurant.
