The Role
My placement in Lubrizol was a great experience. The work I was involved in was very interesting and helped me enhance my technical background knowedge. More importantly, I worked in R&D, an area I am really passionate about.
The working environment in Lubrizol was great and welcoming. All the colleagues were very happy to help whenever it was needed, while at the same time the work I did was valued by my team and managers. All employees respect each other, and that is why the atmosphere in the department was great!
I always got help and guidance from my supervisors not only to run tests, but also to actually understand the benefits my work could have for the company.
My year in Lubrizol was really busy due to the nature of the project I was involved in. The busier though you are, the more you learn from your placement year so it is definitely good it was a busy year.
The responsibilty I was given was signficant, resulting in a busy schedule. Again though, the more responsibility the more you learn from your placemeT. Also, it helped me get more organised and plan further ahead.
I managed to improve significantly my presentation and communication skills, which is important not only for the future years in university but for my career in general. Also, I expanded my technical background and knowledge around the area of tribology and lubrication which will be helpful for my tribology modules in university in the fourth year.
The Company
Great and enjoyable! I worked with really nice people which made every day in the office enjoyable
My supervisors organised all the training I needed to go through in order to be able to perform well in my placement. The placement was really well set up, which helped not only me but also the company.
As I said above, there was a lot of training in the beginning of the placement to get an insight in automotive engines, valvetrain mechanisms, tribology and lubrication. All the training sessions and insights signify how much the company invests and believes in you and the work you are doing.

The future employment prospects within Lubrizol are really good and appealing. There have been a few people who after their placement year and completion of their university studies decided to reapply for a job.
The Culture
Many events, parties and nights out organised by us on an occasional basis. The nightlife in Derby was decent, so the year was really good overall!
Derby was pretty cheap, so the cost of living was very convenient for the student. The cost of lunch in the canteen was low, because it was subsidised, while at the same time it was really tasty. In general, Derby was cheap so I could personally save a substantial amount of money through the year.
The nightlife in Derby was pretty good! There were many nice pubs, bars and clubs in the centre so the nightlife was really good
In the beginning of the placement there was the opportunity to enroll in the Sports and Social club which subsidises many activities and events. The answer is therefore yes! We did go karting, 5-a-side football, climbing, etc.
