The Role
The internship is a really great programme. I really enjoyed myself and met loads of great people.
Most of the people there are very willing to help you and encourage you whilst you are there. In particular the grads are really good at getting you involved.
My line manager was fantastic and one of the reasons I enjoyed the internship so much. She was very supportive and I knew that I could go to her should I have any problems.
This really varies. I did my first rotation in rates sales and my second in rates trading. In sales I did quite a lot of reading and sitting with the desk to watch what they do and ask questions where in rates trading I had more technical projects on excel so I would say I was much busier work-wise during my trading rotation.
There is only so much responsibility you can be given as you're not legally allowed to speak with clients or trade. However, people were set tasks to do where there work would be used not just by UBS but potentially sent to clients so I would say we did get a fair amount of responsibility.
I learnt so so much during the programme. Doing the internship is one of the best ways to learn about the business. I have definitely become much more confident and I think that when you work long hours, your productivity outside of work increases 10 fold because you have to make the most of the time outside of work. I think it's taught me an awful lot about myself as well as the business.
The Company
With it being the summer there were definitely some quiet days but all of the desks have their own dynamic and the general atmosphere was positive. The trading floor is a noisy place and I love being in the middle of the hustle and bustle
I think on the whole the programme was organised very well. I think the training should have reached us sooner because I felt that I was a little pushed for time in completing the modules as I had just finished my finals but I raised that in one my meetings and they said they would feel back to HR. We had lots of socials that were organised for us which was really nice.
There were certainly some members of the teams that REALLY invested their time in you. On my first rotation, because they were generally very busy throughout the day, one of the juniors stayed with me when the markets closed and we would talk about what had happened that day and then he answered any questions I had with respect to what I had read and so on, so I felt most of the time the firm was really invested in me.
Company Parties/Events
I think they are very appealing. I think if the firm really like you then they will be willing to help you in choosing your future career path. My buddy had transferred to the Singapore office to be an economist from UBS London where she was in FX. I think that happens a lot within UBS.
The Culture
Absolutely. All of the interns, particularly in FRC where I interned really got on. We used to go for drinks/dinner together after work. UBS put on an event almost every week so we can all get together again which is really nice. Becasuse the days are so busy it's nice that we can catch up with people in other departments that we may not have seen so much of.
London is expensive and so the cost of living and socialising is much higher than elsewhere. You can find places that aren't as expensive though so it's partly where you choose to go.
We didn't really go out in the area so I can't say so much about that. The bars are often very busy after work though as people like to go and relax,
I don't think there was so much. The days are very long and I lived quite far away from the office. As above though, I often went for a drink or for dinner and tried to take the rest of the evening off.
