The Role
Absolutely brilliant and insightful four weeks - was struck by just how friendly and welcoming the employees were, something which I have not come across before working at a large corporate firm. Grant Thornton audit floor was more like a group of friends than colleagues, smiling rather than stern faces, yet remained professional where appropriate.
No stereotypical intern duties such as filing and making the coffee. Given proper responsibility, challenging work and the flow and speed of our client visit was influenced by my work performance aswell showing that I was not performing all the tedious unimportant tasks
Absolutely fantastic support from all areas - my direct managers were more than happy to explain concepts to me and explain different working practices and the thought processes and structures that underlies the audit process. Equally happy to talk to me in all honesty about life as an auditor without trying to be biased. HR manager was extremely friendly and gave me all the admin support I required and more. Graduate recruitment officers were absolutely amazing in this respect and really made me feel valued!
95% of the time I had a list of meaty tasks to complete but there was a couple of days where there was not much to do - however this was understandable as towards the end of an audit it can become quite complicated and requires the training that qualified accountants learn during the ACA and through experience - four weeks is quite a limited time. However, these one or two days was a nice break as work was pretty busy at times!
Given proper responsibility, challenging work and the flow and speed of our client visit was influenced by my work performance aswell as people were waiting for my testing, rationalisation etc etc to complete sections of the audit and so was evidently quite important to the audit, even contributing to the 'riskier' aspects of the company's audit.
These four weeks showed to me the importance of clarity in communication and teamwork and moreover, the importance of organisation and advanced planning. Can apply this to my degree when I start 3rd year in a couple of weeks by using the same working practices I developed at GT to ensure maximum efficiency in my revision and that nothing is left out!
The Company
Worked in three different teams, one team of which we became very good friends and continue to enjoy an out-of-office friendships. The other team we had a great working relationship got on very well with each other, and the third team was based in the office where we had a whale of a time and kept the atmosphere light, despite working hard and remaining professional in our work. All this should be noted that this is a huge positive - another internship I completed I don't think anybody smiled the whole time I was there!
Just absolutely incredibly smoothly. Hats off to GT graduate recruitment officers for their hard work - it really paid off and there were no hiccups whatsoever during my time there.
GT invested in me like they invest in a long term graduate joiner - was given a laptop all ready to go with my different logins to different servers and email system and research sites/programmes already set up and given to me on the first day, paid for train tickets to skills development courses (which they also paid for) and you could really tell that they pulled out all the stops to show me what a day in the life of a GT graduate joiner is like - brilliant. When you compare this to another internship which took them three days to bring me a computer you really can appreciate how seamless this went!

Have been offered a graduate position following an inteview with a GT partner and have accepted the offer - cannot wait to start once I have graduated
The Culture
Yes absolutely brilliant the grad recruitment officers made quite an effort for the interns to socialise and really get to know each other. We went bowling, comedy nights, painted a school together as part of corporate social responsibility, and spent two days together at the training centre. Could not have asked for a better social scene. In terms of colleagues already at GT, they were incredibly sociable, going for drinks on fridays and meals within our client team and generally WANTING to make the effort with each other and socialise rather than just see it as a 9-5 job and life being separate
Grant Thornton paid for our drinks, transport, food, and anything not covered (i.e. when the tab ran out) was not too pricey as GT had already thought of this
Central London - cannot ask for a better place to socialise?!
Many charity opportunities such as charity runs and painting schools as part of corporate social responsibility. Sports activities available and subsidised gym. Being such an international company however would have liked to have seen some sort of access to foreign language classes but this is just picky now!
