The Role
I enjoyed my time at KPMG as helped me gain valuable experience in the workplace whilst working on an interesting job with incredible friendly people. There were times were I felt the job was becoming a bit repetitive but this was at the start of the internship when there wasn't mcuh variety of work that I could do. As the weeks progressed my enjoyment in the work increased as I got to face new challenging activties that I relished. If anyone was considering to apply for this internship I would definetly reccommend them to take it. I've enjoyed it so much that I fully intend to take the job offer they have offered me for the grad scheme.
I always felt like a valued member of the team no matter how small my job was. I was always told how important the work I was doing for the overall audit and given an explanation on how it linked with other colleagues work. Everyone I met at KPMG was incredible friendly and made me feel comfortable from the get go.
I could not speak highly enough about the guidance I was given throughout the internship. No matter how stupid or easy my questions were they always took time to answer and answer in detail to make sure that I understand.
Throughout my placement I was kept very busy on a daily basis. There was never really a moment where I had nothing to do, and there was always plenty of work to be doing for my colleagues. At times I did have a lot to do, but this was easy to manage especially when in charges would cleary say which work should actually be a priority.
At the start of my placement I was given little responsibility which was understandable as it was completly new job to me. However, as I progress in the placement I was given increasing responsibility for my work. I was soon trusted to deal with clients one on one for an hour to understand their business more and to help me with my own audit work. When at times the work became to complicated for me to fully understand my responsibility was reduced which again was understandable under the circumstances.
I have learnt that it is ok if you don't understand something, and that it always best to ask for advice and help on the the work you are having trouble with. I will take this knowledge to my studies by know feeling comfortable in asking my lecturers if I have any problems with my work. I have learnt how to deal with clients in a professional and respectable manor, which I will take into my everyday life.
The Company
I spent little time at the office due to always being at client sites. However, the time I did spend in the office was professional but friendly. It felt like a relaxed place to work where you do have the opportunity to chat as well as doing your work. Occasional department meals and meetings helped create a warm atmosphere.
The internship was very well organised and I always was kept up to date with what was happening. I had occasional meetings with my performance manager to check everything was ok, as well as having organised meals and events with the other interns which was nice to have to catch up and socialise with them. I always felt welcome in asking the graduate recruitment manager anything regarding the internship. The introductory days were also a massive help to settle in the job and were well organised. It felt like I had been a member of staff their for years as I instantly had access to all places in KPMG that permanent member of staff do.
Everyone who I asked for help always spent time in trying to help me develop my skills and to fully understand the work I was doing. I also had meetings to help me to prepare for my final partner interview which without a doubt helped me to actually pass the final partner interview.

One of the main reasons I original applied for the internship was for the incredible opportunities I had for future employment. As long as the feedback review was acceptable every intern was offered a partner interview and every intern from the partner interview were offered a job. So the future employment prospects for this internship has been the best I have ever heard.
The Culture
There was an excellent social scene amongst fellow colleagues. There were often department meetings with ice breakers to help me feel comfortable with the rest of the team, as well as after work socials to the pub. We often went to meals on Friday during lunch to catch up with fellow colleagues who I may not have seen for the week if they were on away jobs. My only problem was that there wasn't much chance to socialise with the other interns, though we did have a volunteering day with the other interns which was good fun.
Cost of living was fine in Birmingham as it is not too expensive. There are plenty of places to eat and go out in Birmingham which KPMG is perfecly situated in the middle of.
Perfect nightlife in Birmingham, with broad street being the main place to go out. It can get expensive at times but you just have to learn when the cheap nights are for each club. There is always a new club to try due to the sheer amount of clubs, so you will never get bored of the nightlife.
We had an opportunity to take part in a volunteering day which involved painting a classroom in a school with the other internship which was a nice break to socialise and break from work. There are plenty of activties to do at work with a variety of clubs, teams etc. However, there wasn't really much time to take part in these as only being an intern for 8 weeks.
