The Role
M&G is a great place to work, with a brilliant culture both in the work place and socially.
I was always made to feel that I was an important part of the team, contributing to a variety of roadmap projects and being entirely responsible for my deliverables. Colleagues directly relied on the work that I produced to advance projects.
I had weekly one to one meetings with my personal development manager and occasional catch-up meetings with HR. The wider management team also took an interest in my development, frequently asking what I was working on and offering support. More generally, the department was very open and colleagues were enthusiastic about sharing knowledge.
I had a number of projects to work on at any one time, but rarely felt overloaded. Management always made a point of asking how much capacity I had before asking me to work on additional projects which enabled me to manage my own workload and progress at a pace that I was comfortable with.
Work was always non-trivial and I contributed to a number of high profile projects for internal and external stakeholders. I was always responsible for my own deliverables and my work was frequently on the critical path of the projects.
The experience that I gained was at times unrelated to my degree but this was largely because I was trying to deepen my understanding of the wider business. Management were very good at aligning assigned projects to personal interests and development opportunities. A lot of the skills that I developed are transferable and I feel that these will be useful in my future career. A number of training sessions and online resources were also made available which provided a detailed insight into the asset management industry from first principles.
The Company
A good collaborative atmosphere, everyone was friendly and helpful.
The placement was well organised.
Two days of training were organised at the start of the placement which provided a good introduction to the industry and more focused training courses were available online throughout the year. Ongoing development was largely driven by gaining experience on projects relevant to development needs rather than formal training, and this was effectively managed.

M&G is a growing business with attractive employment prospects.
The Culture
Placement students started at the same time as summer interns so there was a large group who regularly ate together and went for drinks after work. Recent graduates were also keen to include placement students in their social scene over the longer term.
The offices are based in the square mile so living costs are obviously high if you don’t have family in the area.
There is always something happening in central London.
There was an active sports and social group, regular ticket ballots, team building events and frequent nights out.
