The Role
I really enjoyed the eight weeks i was with Hymans, everyone in the firm was really friendly and happy to help with any problems i had. I got involved with a huge range of different work for different clients and across a number of the departments. It was a great experience and i definitely learnt a lot about the entire firm.
I felt that all the work i did was actual work that needed to be completed, it wasn't just random jobs that were of no use to anyone. In particular the project i was involved with was definitely of great use to the firm and i felt that they really values the insights i gave them through the project. Everyone was very welcoming and made sure that i settled in well.
There was a really supportive feel, everyone was always happy to answer any questions, either about the work itself or about anything else. It was also great to have a buddy who had only recently started themselves because they could recognise any issues i had. There was also a lot of emphasis on setting and achieving learning objectives.
I was always kept busy but never to a stressful level. It was necessary to be proactive in asking for work but so long as i did that there was always something for me to do. The project i was involved with also kept me busy throughout the eight weeks.
This was largely up to me, in terms of how much responsibility i wanted to take on. But the opportunities for taking responsibility for different aspects of work were definitely there. The project i completed was purely mine and the other two interns responsibility and we were left to manage our time, but there was always support if we needed it.
I learnt a lot about how a company runs and also about communication with clients which will be useful in almost any career i consider. I also developed my presentation and planning skills. Through a number of internal training sessions i became more aware of the industry and different issues affecting it and how companies work to solve these issues.
The Company
The atmosphere was lovely, everyone was friendly and open and it very rarely felt stressed even when there were imminent deadlines. There was a very open atmosphere where you could comfortably talk to anyone within the office. There were also a lot of opportunities for being involved in the more social side of the firm, in terms of working with the charity they support, joining in after work socials etc. Overall it was really welcoming.
It was very well organised for the most part, we were given a plan of what training sessions we would be attending and who our relevant contacts were. I think it would have been nice to have a slightly more formal final review, we had a formal one halfway through but the final one was more of a catch up with our manager but it would have been nice to have spoken to someone from HR as well.
We were given a number of training sessions in terms of use of IT etc but a lot of the placement was learning on the job. I think in terms of the work we were doing that worked better than any formal training because you pick things up quicker when you are actively involved with them. I feel that i developed a lot of useful skills over the eight weeks and really enjoyed all my time there.
There is a potential for a job in the future but our final review hasn't happened yet so i don't know if i will be offered a job. It would be a great place to work if that opportunity did arise.
The Culture
There was always plenty going on that we could get involved with and lots of activities organised within the firm. These were great chances to get to know everyone in a more relaxed environment. It was definitely advantage of being in London.
I lived at home but the travel was very expensive since it was London. The area around the office was very expensive but no more so than anywhere else in London. Definitely living around there would be very expensive.
Immediately around the office it was quite quiet but bars and clubs weren't more than a ten minute walk away so there was always plenty going on and it is London so nightlife is never very far away.
There were a number of different things going on to get involved with over the eight weeks, from helping with charity work, a treasure hunt and a number of other things. I think the firm is good at making sure there is plenty to do.
