The Role
I really enjoyed my placement as it was a new experience and so I found everything both challenging but fun. I had a great sense of pride working for Rolls-Royce
To start with I did not feel valued by my colleagues as I had no knowledge of any of the tasks that I was underatking and so found it difficult to contribute. However, towards the end of my placement I felt part of the team and was able to make improvements and contributions to help the business move forward.
I was given a lot of support by my manager, always checking if I had tasks to be doing or if I understood a certain concept. I also appreciated being left to get on with my work and not being asked if I was okay too often.
In general I was always busy on a daily basis, however some weeks were busier/quieter than others depending on what needed to be done and any upcoming events meetings. On average I would say that I had just the right amount of work to do and was glad not to be sat there with nothing to do.
As I developed my understanding and knowledge of the funtion I was given more and more responsibility. For example I lead E-invoicing training sessions with suppliers and was the owner of certain tasks.
I have not been able to put my new skills to the test yet but feel that my growth in confidence and better delivery will be very beneficial during my final year at University.
The Company
The general atmosphere was great. I felt very comfortable and could concentrate in the proffessional working environment. I also found that everyone was very friendly and were willing to help and answer any questions.
Overall the placement was fairly well set up but it could be improved. For many interns it took quite some time to successfully log in to their laptop and all of the applications that were needed. I found that it started fairly slowly and took a couple of weeks to actually get going. However, compared to other interns my experience was much better with a fairly quick log-in onto my laptop and I received my objectives after a few days.
I had a few useful training sessions and workshops and gained my Yellow Belt qualification. However, overall I had less training than I anticipated and was not able to go on the Gas Turbines basic course.
Sports and Social Club
Future employment prospects are very appealing within the organisation and I hope to succesfully make it onto the graduate scheme as it is a great building block for further employment with Rolls-Royce.
The Culture
There was a good social scene where a number of interns had a regular lunch appointment on Fridays where we could all catch up and learn what each other had been doing. I also played 5-a-side football with other colleagues from my office and trained and played for the Rolls-Royce rugby team.
The cost of both living and socialising in Derby is very cheap and I was able to take advantge of the free shuttle bus that the company puts on between the city centre and different sites.
N/A
There were many opportunities with the AGA however I did not have the time due to other commitments.
