The Role
Overall I quite enjoyed the experience, I learned a fair bit and it was a nice place to work. However organisation was poor, especially by HR who failed to arrange IT for me resulting in a week of me doing nothing.
The vast majority of my colleagues treated me very well, including me in office jokes and helping me out when needed. A few were a bit patronising.
My manager barely spoke to me throughout my placement and at one point forgot my name. He assigned a contractor to work with me (who was very nice and very helpful) and that was about it.
Quite a lot of the time I had nothing to do because I was stuck waiting on other people and hadn't been given any other work to do. When I asked my colleagues whether there was anything I could do to help them they responded either that they had no work to do themselves or that there wasn't any way I could help them.
I was given responsibility for running a small project, and given freedom to conduct trials and pursue whatever I thought was the most promising.
I received no training, but I gained some useful skills in project planning, design of experiments, and reading engineering drawings.
The Company
The atmosphere was pretty nice, with plenty of friendly office banter and cake on people's birthdays.
The whole thing was very badly organised. HR told me my IT had been set up but hadn't actually done it, so I spent a week doing nothing. My manager clearly hadn't planned what I was going to be doing and gave me only a very vague project outline.
There was no training.
The Culture
There were only a couple of other students on site, and we were all on different schemes. We were not introduced to each other, and there were no organised event or social activities.
Accommodation was pretty cheap, but a long way from the site, and transport costs were high. There wasn't much opportunity for socialising.
No idea, probably not very good.
There were no activities outside of work.
