The Role
I found it quite fun, though at times I felt I not completely applicable to being a Mechanical Engineer. I also learnt alot about large companies which has the potential to be useful in future.
I felt quite valued, and got on well with everyone. The office culture was very relaxed and everyone was very supportive and friendly.
While being given a relative amount of autonomy I had regular meetings with my supervisor which were useful to structure my assignments. I also worked closely with my other supervisor.
At times I was very busy, but due to the reliance on other people for project implementation, at times I was without a set task which led t periods of inactivity.
I was given alot of responsibility in regard to the project I was assigned however the project was seperate from the majority of work leaving me with little responsibility over other areas.
The skills I learnt during the placement weren't directly applicable to a Mechanical Engineering degree, however I did learn alot about VBA programming and engineering with a multinational company.
The Company
The atmosphere had a good balance between being relaxed and friendly while everyone was still intensely focused on their job.
There were various problems at the start of the placement for the first week or two as everyone had come back from christmas. Overall the rest of the placement ran smoothly with a few minor hiccups when various parts of the project were complete.
There was generalised training that I attended, however, some training occured with regard to the projects aims.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I am quite interested in future employment and have registered my interest; though I have yet to recieve any reply.
The Culture
As there were no other students in the area that I was working I socialised with colleagues instead which was quite easy.
The cost of living and socialising was acceptable however rooms were limited leading to prolems with changing of the living situation.
Nightlife was limited with it being restricted to bars and pubs, unless one wanted to travel on the train which limited socialising due to train times.
Due to the length of time at the placement activities outwith work were limited.
