The Role
Overall I enjoyed the internship with EY. I was based in assurance which meant I was always in a team of people. The teams were a lot younger than I expected and many of my colleagues had a great sense of humour too. The work itself I found was more interesting when you asked questions about the reasoning behind the tasks you were set. The social events for interns were fantastic though, from bowling to a night making pizzas everything was phenomenal.
I felt valued from the beginning and although I came in to assurance with no prior experience I was given the time and effort by others to explain everything to me beforehand. The support given was of a very high standard. We were also assigned a buddy who you could ask any questions to. Mine was again extremely helpful with anything I had to ask.
This was very good overall. My mentor was very helpful and we spoke at lengths in the review meetings about prospects for the future if I was to stay on for a graduate job. He gave me advice and answered all my questions, these meetings were never pushed for time. At EY you can instantly message anyone in the whole firm so it was really helpful for quickly finding out information.
This varied depending on the client I was with and the team I was in. Some days I had tasks from 9 until 5.30 and other days I had 'downtime' where I could catch up on other things such as the training materials provided and writing feedback request forms (these are submitted after working on each client for general feedback on your performance during the audit).
I feel the responsibility given grew towards the end as I understood more about the software and assurance as a whole. In 6 weeks I learnt a great deal very quickly and was proud of what I accomplished in the later weeks compared to the first few days. Overall in the audit you are playing a small part but the work you do is still essential and valued by others.
The teamwork and networking skills I gained will be valuable for life. For my degree the analytical skills from this internship will help too. In terms of beyond finishing my degree I have accepted a graduate job offer from EY so the skills I picked up will pay off when I join again!
The Company
Very good, a lot of interesting people and I attended socials such as golf and clay pigeon shooting. It is an open office and I found myself talking to many people because of this.
Very well organised, from the induction at the beginning in Manchester (for regional interns) to the training given in the office I was very impressed throughout.
A lot of investment in terms of people's time given to explain things to me as I was completely new to everything. Sometimes in the beginning it felt like my colleagues were taking longer to explain things to me than it would have taken for them to do the task themselves but everyone is always keen to help you learn more so will do it anyway!
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing, after 3 years of training you can become ACA qualified which means you are chartered. The opportunities available after this are vast in both EY and outside companies.
The Culture
Very good! The induction was incredible due to the social events and friendly interns I met. The events included bowling, making pizza and going out to dinner/bars. We all stayed in a very nice hotel too!
The cost of living was small for me as I drove in from home. I would recommend the regional offices for this reason (and the fact it feels more like a family). The socialising with colleagues was very cheap as EY subsidises the work events.
I didn't experience this but I don't think too many people get excited about Luton nightlife! London is close by though.
Yes, the socials with the office. We went clay pigeon shooting and played golf in the 6 weeks I was there.
