The Role
Was given a project to complete which immediately got me stuck in. As things started moving it became a really enjoyable piece of work that I could get recognised by. Also, events were scheduled throughout the internship.
My work began to have an impact immediately as it was a piece of analysis that needed to be done but was too time consuming for the regular bankers, however they all helped explain things and had time to give suggestions, and generally appreciated the work.
Although initially thrown into the deep end, many colleagues had time to spend going through anything I was unsure of and were very helpful!
The pace was really set by how busy we wanted to get as we had the full 8 weeks to spend on our work and could manage this as we wanted. That said, most of the day was spent working and left time for chatting to colleagues and meeting directors etc.
We were given access to several systems that had some confidential information about clients etc, and this was an early responsibility. We did't get to meet clients but that was due to the short nature of our internship. The projects were completely down to us, though.
We spent a week in London training with hard and soft skills. The best part of this was the Excel training day which allowed me to increase my spreadsheet skills for use during the internship and beyond. Other skills learnt were networking, risk management etc.
The Company
Really friendly and enjoyable atmosphere in the office. Surprisingly relaxed!
There were events put on throughout but it was more of an afterthought with the regional internships. The actual team were very nice and invited us to their own events which were not run by the central campus recruitment.
We had a week of training in London, and put up too, which was certainly not cheap and we had help throughout the programme from the team. We have regular appraisals by the line manager and we have to submit a development log twice to update the central recruitment how we are learning.
Company Parties/Events
I was offered a job on the last day of the internship which was very nice and well organised, and really shows how hard work is recognised.
The Culture
Very nice social in London before the internship started which was spending time with 450 other interns. During the internship, on Fridays the team would go out together which was great.
Very cheap around the office, and signed up for a local discount card which saved a minimum of 10% in all the nearby places. Barclays also gave us an allowance for accommodation.
Manchester City centre - as good as it gets.
The office had several citizenship opportunities and events unrelated to work which was a nice addition.
