    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a fantastic experience to see the kind of work I can expect to do once I graduate. It taught me what service engineering was as I'd never considered it as a future career. I was given responsibility of actual tasks but there were always people around to help if I had any queries.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The whole team was really welcoming and were more than happy to answer any questions I had. Some of them even went out of their way to show me around different parts of the company. Even people that I didn't work with were very friendly and welcoming.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a great line manager who let me get on with my tasks but was approachable and always available if I had any queries.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had a few tasks to work on over the 10 weeks and whenever I felt like I didn't have much to do, I spoke to members of my team and they found useful and interesting small tasks for me to do. I felt like I was given meaningful tasks and not just things the rest of the team didn't want to do.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had my tasks but there were always people around me in my team that could help and support me as and when needed.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt about a completely different side of engineering (service engineering) and I also learnt a lot about gas turbines as I'd never studied it before. I got first-hand experience of working for a large engineering firm and some of the work I might do in the future. I also gained other transferable skills that will be useful in every day life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office was really welcoming which was surprising as it was a large office. The atmosphere was light-hearted and friendly.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was really well organised and well structured with the tasks for me already planned out. RR were really flexible and allowed me to start my placement 2 weeks earlier than the other interns which was surprising as it is such a large company. This was probably the reason for my IT account not being fully activated until a few days after starting the internship.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They let me visit as much of the company as I wanted to see and they let me go, along with the other service engineering interns, to RAF Marham to see first-hand customer interaction.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I will hopefully have the opportunity to do another summer placement with them next summer with the aim of getting on the graduate scheme the year after.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was an Apprentice, Intern and Graduate Association that organised weekly events for is to attend and meet fellow interns. There were also sports teams you could get involved in.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Accommodation is quite expensive if you live in central Bristol and cheaper if you live away from the centre nearer to the RR site. Average prices for socialising.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bristol has a good nightlife due to the university presence.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The Apprentice Association organised many events and sports clubs to get involved in.
