The Role
It was a fantastic experience to see the kind of work I can expect to do once I graduate. It taught me what service engineering was as I'd never considered it as a future career. I was given responsibility of actual tasks but there were always people around to help if I had any queries.
The whole team was really welcoming and were more than happy to answer any questions I had. Some of them even went out of their way to show me around different parts of the company. Even people that I didn't work with were very friendly and welcoming.
I had a great line manager who let me get on with my tasks but was approachable and always available if I had any queries.
I had a few tasks to work on over the 10 weeks and whenever I felt like I didn't have much to do, I spoke to members of my team and they found useful and interesting small tasks for me to do. I felt like I was given meaningful tasks and not just things the rest of the team didn't want to do.
I had my tasks but there were always people around me in my team that could help and support me as and when needed.
I learnt about a completely different side of engineering (service engineering) and I also learnt a lot about gas turbines as I'd never studied it before. I got first-hand experience of working for a large engineering firm and some of the work I might do in the future. I also gained other transferable skills that will be useful in every day life.
The Company
Everyone in the office was really welcoming which was surprising as it was a large office. The atmosphere was light-hearted and friendly.
The internship was really well organised and well structured with the tasks for me already planned out. RR were really flexible and allowed me to start my placement 2 weeks earlier than the other interns which was surprising as it is such a large company. This was probably the reason for my IT account not being fully activated until a few days after starting the internship.
They let me visit as much of the company as I wanted to see and they let me go, along with the other service engineering interns, to RAF Marham to see first-hand customer interaction.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Very appealing. I will hopefully have the opportunity to do another summer placement with them next summer with the aim of getting on the graduate scheme the year after.
The Culture
There was an Apprentice, Intern and Graduate Association that organised weekly events for is to attend and meet fellow interns. There were also sports teams you could get involved in.
Accommodation is quite expensive if you live in central Bristol and cheaper if you live away from the centre nearer to the RR site. Average prices for socialising.
Bristol has a good nightlife due to the university presence.
The Apprentice Association organised many events and sports clubs to get involved in.
