The Role
Most of the work was a lot of fun and we had regular social events. We had drinks after work every other week and had an office day out punting. First couple of days were spent just reading up on the product I was going to be working on but after that the work has been great!
Honestly if you were an outsider looking in I don't think you;d be able to tell who was an intern and who wasn't.
I sit next to my mentor all day and whenever I have any question I can just turn round and ask.
In my first 2 weeks I did have a few days where I was twiddling my thumbs a bit but since I got onto my main task I've always had something to do. Not too busy, well not yet, as I've just been told to do as much as I can before the end of my internship.
I'm doing regression tests and so I'm not dealing with customers and hence it's not a huge responsibility from that point of view however I have been creating the test framework all by myself and it is something that the product I'm working on does desperately need.
I think the main skill I will take away is being able to write readable code. Before my internship I had only ever written code for myself and so coming to a company when your code is going to be read thousands of times meant I had to learn a lot of coding standards which should be useful, not necessarily for my degree, but if I ever get a job in software.
The Company
Very relaxed, dress code is not strict at all! The office I worked in is quite new so the average age was quite higher than other offices and there were only 2 other interns here but everyone got on and we all went out on social events together.
Had lots of work organised for me, however I was told I would hear about what I would be working on and who my manager would be in January but didn't actually hear until June.
I have been taught a new programming language and generally how to write readable code. Also learnt a lot of coding tricks which I won't use here but they still taught me to make me a better software engineer anyway.
Flexi Time
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Can jump into a final round interview for a full time job or apply for another internship without interview. A large amount of interns here are doing their second or third (or even fourth) internship here and every week I see a load of new starters join who interned here.
The Culture
Only 3 of us due to the office being new and quite small, we got on really well but being so few of us there wasn't much to do. However the whole office went for drinks every other week and we also had a day out punting which was a lot of fun!
Camrbidge is quite expensive but the company house was heavily subsidised.
Cambridge night life is not exactly renowned, also given that there were only 3 interns we didn't bother.
Not unless you go to Cambridge uni, luckily I do so all of the activities I did outside of work were through my college but other than that there isn't a lot going on here over the summer.
