The Role
Overall I learnt a lot about working in technology in a banking environment while being able to make friends and contacts in the industry. The overall experience was very positive and was a very worthwhile summer.
I was always invited to group meetings and given credit for any work that I did, if I ever had a question I always had a point of contact that was able to help me at some point during the day even if they were quite busy. I was made to feel like a real team member very quickly.
This is one of the best environments I have been in, the employees are incredibly friendly and generous with their time. Provided you put in the effort, most people will help you if you need it and give you something to do, so you definitely shouldn't get bored or feel lost.
This varied from week to week, at first new tasks take a little longer but towards the end they have become routine and you find you have a lot more spare capcity. As the internship progresses you will get more responsibility so you should never have too much free time on your hands.
As an Intern you are encouraged to own any responsibilities you are allocated, meaning if something goes wrong you should be able to find out how to fix it, this really motivates you to learn the details and you quickly develop knowledge around products and projects. That being said there is a lot to learn so you definitely won't be running the show by the end of the internship, but certainly feel a sense of satisfaction.
I have learnt about aspects of the industry that no book or search engine trawling could teach, as well as the dynamics of an office environment.
The Company
Very good: clean, professional and friendly.
Very well, from the first day you will receive a welcome pack which provides an itinerary of the Internship and Line Managers are experienced enough to know how much work to give you at each stage of the internship.
An absolutely phenominal amount, we recieved a week worth of training in financial instruments, a session on pitching and weekly speaker sessions about different aspects of the business, we were also offered Java training.
