The Role
I worked on an exciting project and was fully supported by excellent full time gsk staff.
I was pleasantly surprised as to how much gsk values it's industrial placement students.
Fantastic support structure in place for placement students to develop their own skills required a successful career in science.
The amount of work varied during my placement, at times very little practical work was carried out but that gave me enough time to read up and build my scientific knowledge.
Due to the nature of my scientific work, I had to have supervision/support from my supervisor. However i was left in charge for a majority of my time in the lab.
This year was the best decision I have made for my career in science and would recommend anyone to undertake a placement at gsk.
The Company
A surprisingly friendly atmosphere
Extremely well structured with seminars and other activities directly aimed at improving student skills.
A considerable amount of time and resources were spent to train myself to operate certain machines such as the flow cytometer and carry out elisas etc.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
They organise specific seminars in order to better prepare us for the applications/interviews after university but we were told we have no specific advantages over others who have not done a placement at gsk when applying for full time positions
The Culture
Excellent social life due to a large amount of placement students at the R&D site in Stevenage.
Extremely cheap! And really close to london on the train for weekend trips.
Not great only one club called chicagos which really is quite questionable as a club but the large number of students at gsk ensures there is always something to do at the weekends (house parties, London trips etc)
Again stevenage is extremely close to london and therefore endless possibilities!! Not much to do in Stevenage however you can always go for a run or bike ride into the countryside!
