The Role
The hours were very long, in the 3 months I worked there I had to do some 13hour shifts without a lunch break. Over time is paid but it is not a competitive salary.
The hours were long but your hard work is always appreciated by colleagues and your manager.
The branch was always very busy but managers and area managers will always support you and disscuss your progress.
Many times I found myself too busy before I had enough experience and training to deal with it. This was quite embarressing in front of customers when I wouldn't be able to help them and all my colleagues were too busy to help me.
Once you get to grips with the job, you will be given a lot of responsibility. However, I found I was given too much too soon as I was alone in the office on my second day on the job and I hadn't even been shown how to use the phones.
I did learn self discipline which will help me with my studies. It has also made me realise how important it is to study and work hard so that you have more opportunities at the end. It did develop my confidence and looks good on my CV. My customer service skills have improved which is bound to help me in the future.
The Company
We did have some banter, but sometimes it could be quite an unproffessional atmosphere.
I was impressed with the organisation and the all expenses paid training week where you stay in a hotel and get food and car provided.
They invest a lot into training and making you feel like your progressing so that you don't lose interest.
Healthcare from home
I did get offered to go back to work there after my degree but I am not planning on going back. Working 55- 60 hours a week on a scratch above minimum wage is not appealing to me.
The Culture
We did not have any social events.
I worked in a very run-down area so housing was reasonable and there is a wide variety of places to eat for many budgets.
Nightlife was good but could barely go out because I was so exhausted from working so many hours.
There are opportunities to get involved in charity work but I wouldn't know how to get involved.
